Drawing on the power of art to make history come alive, this book is designed to support new Americans as they prepare for citizenship. It includes and builds on much of the information about United States history that is taught in citizenship and civics classes. Integrated with text and exercises in chronological and thematic chapters are reproductions of paintings, sculptures, photographs, and prints, most of them from the Harvard Art Museums or other Harvard collections. Teachers can use the images (guidelines are included) to help students engage with works of American art and events in American history, relate both to their own experience, and discuss the “big ideas” at the heart of American democracy. Judy Murray is Senior Museum Educator at the Harvard Art Museums. Ray Williams is former Director of Education at the Harvard Art Museums.
